About the work
Zineb Sedira has created a new limited edition especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany her solo exhibition ‘Zineb Sedira: Dreams Have No Titles’ 15 Feb – 12 May 2024.
Sedira’s edition, entitled No Matter What… (2024) draws upon numerous references from within her Whitechapel Gallery exhibition Dreams Have No Titles. This newly created edition collages significant imagery and text from the project and Sedira’s wider practice. Dancing feet captured on film from the artist’s reimagining of Ettore Scola’s Le Bal (1983), are combined with film spools nodding to Sedira’s research projects within film archives and work with activist films produced across France, Algeria and Italy in the 1960s and 1970s. Combining collage, a long standing component within Sedira’s oeuvre, with silkscreen text proclaiming a closing line from Dreams Have No Titles’ film of the same name (“no matter what, just keep on dancing”) the work is a convalescence of celebration, liberation and collective shared experience.

About the artist
Zineb Sedira (b.1963) was born in Paris to Algerian parents, and moved to London to study art. She studied at Central Saint Martins, Slade School of Art, and the Royal College of Art. She now lives between London and Paris but also works in Algeria. Working between the mediums of photography, film, installation and performance, Sedira is most known for her explorations of the human effects of geography. During her earlier work, this was often grounded in her own family’s experiences, but in recent years Sedira has turned to various kinds of archives, interrogating the historical narratives that they hold.
