While the Red Army often struggled with shortages of transport and rear-echelon support, pioneer and assault engineer detachments were a notable exception — their expertise was simply too essential to do without. Tasked with bridge-building, demolitions, fortification construction, and minefield placement and clearance, these specialists were the backbone of Soviet offensive operations.

Assault engineers were given the most dangerous assignments of all: liquidating enemy strongpoints during an advance and clearing obstacles to allow tank units to break through. With casualty rates extreme even by Red Army standards, assault engineer units were sometimes equipped with the SN-42 steel body armour to give them a fighting chance in the brutal close-quarters fighting that defined the Eastern Front.
