White privilege and racial injustice persist in the Church; and despite a commitment to promote justice for all, racism is a reality of life, and has been since before the founding of our nation. In addition throughout most of our nation's history, theology, as a discipline, has remained silent about racism and, at its worst, overtly supported racist practices. This book, examines: 1) what racism is and how it functions, especially in the contemporary setting; 2) how the United States has claimed to be God's chosen nation, yet systematically disadvantages persons of color; 3) how theology's silence sustains racial injustice in the Church, rather than excises it; and 4) how reformulating theological discourse can contribute to racial justice within ecclesial communities and the larger landscape of society.

The Horizons in Theology series offers brief but highly engaging essays on the major concerns and questions in theological studies. Each volume addresses in a clear and concise style the scope and contours of a fundamental question as it relates to theological inquiry and application; sketches the nature and significance of the subject; and opens the broader lines of discussion in suggestive, evocative, and programmatic ways. Written by senior scholars in the field, and ideally suited as supplements in the classroom, Horizons will be an enduring series that brings into plain language the big questions of theology. It will inspire a new generation of students to eagerly embark on a journey of reflective study.

The most important theological insight of our time is that theology is always done in the context of power. Race is inextricably linked to power and shapes not only our everyday lives but also our faith. That a white theologian tackles this topic is significant because it shows that race is not a matter of special interest for minorities alone, and that addressing race in light of the gospel of Jesus Christ provides new faith, hope, and freedom for all.
--Joerg Rieger, Wendland-Cook Professor of Constructive Theology, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas

An extraordinary resource for understanding how mainline U.S. constructed Christianity has privileged whiteness at the expense of all others. This volume is vital for those who want to join the liberationist ranks as allies so we can free our faith from racism and further the work of social transformation in the changing U.S. context.
-- Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas, Associate Professor of Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University, Executive Director of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Black Religious Scholars Group

Elaine Robinson, as a prominent white scholar, has placed herself at the margins in her scholarly work. She speaks with scholars of color whose work focuses on racism. More importantly, she speaks from them and in so doing brings vigor to the renewed debates on racism in the academy and the church.
--M. Douglas Meeks, Cal Turner Chancellor Professor of Theology and Wesleyan Studies, Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Nashville, Tennessee

For those who take race seriously (we all should) this is a theologically insightful and nuanced book that de-constructs whiteness in the United States, and offers a re-construction that will begin a must needed dialogue in the academy and the church. This book will be a conversation starter like few others
-- F. Douglas Powe, Jr., E. Stanley Jones Associate Professor of Evangelism and Associate Professor of Black Church Studies, Saint Paul School of Theology

With Race and Theology Elaine A. Robinson provides a critical resource for understanding the ways that race and racism have distorted the Christian faith in North America. More important, the book offers insights for what we might do about this distortion. By offering an analysis of the frequently used but, often wrongly conflated ideas of race and racism Robinson, uncovers the ways that oppressive social powers often flourish in contexts where well-meaning people would wish otherwise. In her unfolding of this analysis, Robinson introduces to not only some of the more important theologians and theorists of our day, but also to what it means to expand this conversation beyond simply black and white. In all, an important work that is useful to both academic and more popular conversations about the content of faithfulness in a race conscious society.
---Stephen G. Ray Jr., Professor of Systematic Theology, Neal A. and Ila F. Fisher Chair of Theology, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary; and Executive Director, the Society for the Study of Black Religion

OBSESSED with this start to the series + incredible narration!
Format: Audiobook
5⭐️ 3🌶️ 5🎧 Publisher: Podium Narrators: June Deborahae, Vincent Skye, Ace Bentley Narration type: multicast, dual style Writing perspective: first person, multi POV Standard length: 9:28 Listening speed: 1.9x Tropes: why choose, sports, new adult/college, forced proximity, found family, one bed, disability, MH + neurodivergent rep 📖 I have always been a why choose lover and this is def going to be a new fav series, I can tell already! I absolutely LOVE Abby’s writing! Joey is such a great FMC — she is strong, but has a past that has pain, making her a complex and layered character with some mystery. The guys are amazing as well — they are all different and react in such varying ways to Joey showing up on the scene! If you are going in expecting a full on dark romance with kidnapping vibes, this is not it. This is definitely a romance with darker themes, but these guys treat their girl well, though they may be misguided at times (cough, Decker, cough 🤣). One of my absolute fav things about this book is the incredible representation — two of the guys deal with chronic pain (RA + lupus), another is on the spectrum, and Joey has anxiety that can lead to panic attacks and more severe issues. As someone who deals with chronic pain (an autoimmune arthritis in the RA family) I love to see characters like me in books! I have no doubt by the end of the series I am going to love all the guys equally, but right now I am falling HARD for Kylian (who doesn’t love stats daddy?!) and Locke is firmly in second place. Decker and Kendrick have some work to do, but I’m sure this is all according to Abby’s master plan. And wowwww that cliffy was a painful one! I’ll be starting book 2 in T-minus 3 seconds! 🎧 This audio was phenomenal! All three narrators did an incredible job — the casting was absolutely on point!! June deBorahae narrated the majority of the book as most is from Joey’s POV and she was magnificent. Her transition from narrator internal voice to dialogue was always very clear, as were her transitions in dialogue between all characters which was an impressive feat with the number of characters she had going on. She truly blew me away as Joey though. The emotion she showed was incredible — going from tough and ready to go head to head with anyone, to exceedingly compassionate and kind, to anxious and sucked into memories of the past. Vincent Skye voiced Decker, Locke, and Kylian and did a great job with all of them. Each was voiced in a way that was fitting for their character and personality. I especially love the way he portrayed Kylian. And last but not least, Ace Bentley narrated the part of Kendrick to perfection. His portrayal was so fitting for his tough and grumpy ways. While Kendrick only had one POV chapter in this book, Abby tells me we can expect more from Ace as Kendrick in the next one!!

Amazing Story & Narration🎧 Intriguing Series Start!
Format: Kindle
Too Safe Boys of Lake Chapel By: Abby Millsaps Narrated by: June deBorahae, Vincent Sky, Ace Bentley This is my first book written by Abby Millsaps and she completely blew me away. It is always great to check out new authors and even greater when they leave a huge impression on you, and that is exactly what Ms. Millsaps did. “Too Safe” is an amazing start to the “Boys of Lake Chapel” series, a steamy ‘why choose’ reverse harem sports romance and wow, that ending sure leaves you wanting more, no make that, needing more. Josephine “Joey” Meyer is turning things around for herself, starting over in a new town and college, Lake Chapel University, with a full ride scholarship. When she arrives at the school, four men greeted her, and the first words one of them says is “she is a girl”. Turns out, they were expecting the recipient of the Crusade Scholarship to be a male, and that would not be the last she sees of those four guys, Decker “Cap” Crusade, Kylian, Kendrick Taylor and Nicholas “Locke” Lockwood. Decker, Locke and Kendrick are star football players for their school’s team, and Killian, a geek, runs the stats for the team. Each one of these characters is as intriguing as the next, and we are just getting to know them and there is more to come. There is a lot of mystery behind Joey’s past, and there is a lot more to learn about each of the guys. Joey clicked with Locke, but a misunderstanding puts her in the hot seat with the guys, who vote on what to do with her and that is why she wound up living in to their elaborate home, the home of the popular boy where everyone flocks to for their massive parties. I loved how everything played out in this book, the writing, plot and world building are absolutely fantastic, as are the character growth and development. There is never a dull moment, drama is non-stop and there is some angst, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance reverse harem style. Abby Millsaps, thank you for this amazing story and the wild ride.  🎧📚🎧 June deBorahae, Vincent Sky, and Ace Bentley were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and do so with a complete understanding of who they are portraying, giving each a voice that is fitting. I loved how they took their roles and owned them, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their narration elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thank you for this fantastic listen.

great start to a series
Format: Kindle
This was my first read from this author, and I am intrigued to continue the series! This is a college, why choose, between 4 football guys and the new girl in town. The FMC, Joey, is accused of seeing something she shouldn’t and is forced to move in with the guys in their isle until the end of football season. Joey is a girl who’s had a shit hand in life, but has continued to persevere. She deals with silent demons but doesn’t let them take control of her life. She has spunk and doesn’t cower. Kylian is the BEST. Hands down my favorite! He’s our blunt, neurodivergent cinnamon roll. Locke is a close second, he’s all about Joey from the moment they meet. Decker - now he’ll grow on you, I’m curious to see how he expands in book 2. Kendrick- not a fan lol. But there’s always a least favorite in these stories. This is a slow burn, but to be expected when there are multiple MMC to contend with. This story had good flow, and really grabbed my attention. I read in one sitting. I plan to continue the series!
