Sharyl and Windy Downwind and their children travel from their home on the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota to powwows all around the region. For the past year, their oldest daughter, Shian, has been honored as junior princess for Bug-o-nay-ge-shig School. At the Leech Lake Memorial Day gathering, Shian will hand over her crown to the next princess. Later that summer, the family attends the Red Lake Fourth of July powwow seeking healing and comfort. Windy is mourning his mother, who recently passed away, and also honoring her by dancing at the powwow. At ceremonies and in daily life, Windy and Sharyl celebrate Anishinaabe culture by teaching their children traditional skills, dance steps, and lifeways, all part of the circle of community and the seasons and life. ESSENTIAL for all parents and educators to read

As an elementary educator for the last fifteen years, I finally found a book that put all the frustration and wondering of why kids come to school struggling, drained, and overwhelmed. Borba states, "We are creating strivers, not thinkers, produced to be test-takers while missing the opportunity to be people."
She points out that we are all running on empty. In her book, she discusses the 7 core strengths that kids need in order to shine. Thrivers not only provides readers with current research, but it has practical and easy tips that both parents and educators can do to help foster a new generation of thrivers and not strivers.
If you are worried about your children's mental health, depression, anxiety, and stress, you must read this book. This book comes at a time when we all must work together to move the pendulum of what achievement looks like in 2021 and reimagine education for our youth, tweens, teens, and young adults.

A highly readable mix of practical strategies, engaging anecdotes and research-based insights, Thrivers underscores the importance of our kids' innate character strengths for their success and happiness. I found this book perfectly timed, given all the pandemic-related stress our teens have had on top of everything else! Helpful pinpointing which traits to focus on
Format: Hardcover
I loved the format of the book, how are you take a diagnostic test and then read the sections that pertain to the character traits that you want to strengthen in your child. But when I read the chapters, I was disappointed. I was hoping for new information. If I had never read a book on how to support my child’s development and education, I would have been delighted.
