Enrich the moment by experiencing Japanese tea in a one-of-a-kind Kuro Raku Chawan.

The first Raku tea bowl was created by Chōjirō, a tile craftsman, with the guidance of Sen no Rikyū. The prominent tea master was seeking a tea bowl for a style of Japanese tea ceremony emphasizing simplicity known as wabi-cha. The Raku bowl reflected the ideals of the wabi aesthetic, as it was formed by hand with an appreciation for the natural imperfections.

The Kuro Raku Chawan (Black Raku Tea Bowl) was made by Motoo Kawasaki, the 8th generation Master of Raku Studio Waraku. The pottery studio was established around 1830 in the Gion district in Kyoto, Japan.

Each Kuro Raku Chawan is unique as it is crafted without a potter's wheel and instead uses a hand-forming technique called Tezukune. After it is shaped, an iron-rich glaze is applied to the bowl by hand. Finally, the Raku bowl is fired in a kiln using a traditional technique called Hikidashi. This method allows the bowl to be fired at a high temperature and then cooled rapidly to result in its beautiful black finish.

The Kuro Raku Chawan can be used for practicing Sadō (the Japanese way of tea) or for bringing inner tranquility to daily tea preparation. The pleasing curves and weight of the chawan make it a delight to hold while enjoying freshly whisked matcha or hojicha. When not in use, the tea bowl can be carefully stored in its wooden box or displayed as a cherished piece of teaware.

Please expect and embrace slight variations in color, size, or shape since this item is crafted by hand. Original wooden box included.

How to care for your Raku Tea Bowl

  • Please handle the Kuro Raku Chawan with care.
  • Before your first use, soak the tea bowl in lukewarm water for 10 minutes. Be sure to avoid hot water as the steam will expand in the small cavities and crack the bowl.
  • Before each use, soak the tea bowl in lukewarm water for 30 seconds.
  • After each use, wash the tea bowl by hand right away without the use of detergent or any acidic substances.
  • Dry the tea bowl in a well-ventilated area for a week before storing.

My 3 year old 20 lb dog chewed the nose and squeaker out within an hour after receiving this toy. Had to throw it away.

Durable Fun for Chew-Happy Dogs
Size: Medium, Style: Squeaker
This dog ball has been a hit with my dogs, despite their tendency to chew through toys. These balls hold up surprisingly well given his chewing habits, which is why I keep coming back to them. They provide endless fun with their squeaky feature, keeping my dogs engaged and active. One thing I really like is their durability. While my dogs do eventually chew them up, they last a significant amount of time compared to other toys we've tried. The squeaker adds an extra layer of excitement, making playtime even more enjoyable for my dog. However, if your dog is an aggressive chewer, be prepared for some wear, tear, and replacement over time. The squeaker balls are worth it for the durability and entertainment they provide with the current price tag. They withstand a good amount of chewing, making them a reliable choice for medium breeds that love to play and chew. Just remember that they will not last forever.
