Exceptionally pleasant and practical to use. Provençal Black has a lovely robustness of character and remains one of our best-selling ranges after almost half a century of continuous production.

Designed in 1975 when Mellor was the first designer to develop the idea of combining stainless steel with high quality molded acetal resin. Provençal was very much attuned to the good food revolution of the 1970s with its gently rounded handles and soft curved shapes suggesting Mediterranean cooking, fresh seasonal meals and sociable dining.

It has always been a favorite in modern restaurants, reflecting our increasingly easy-going attitudes to food.

The rounded knife blades are made from high carbon stainless steel for a superior cutting edge. Handles are acetal resin with brass rivets.

Provençal Black is available in the following sets:

  • 6-Piece Cutlery Place Setting: 1 table knife; 1 dessert knife; 1 table fork; 1 dessert fork; 1 soup spoon; and 1 dessert spoon.

From "David Mellor: Master Metalworker" (David Mellor Design, 2013):

David Mellor designed several new ranges of cutlery specifically for production in Broom Hall.  The first was Provençal, originally made in stainless steel with natural rosewood handles and brass rivets.  This was a design very much attuned to the good food revolution of those years, encouraged by Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson's cookery books and the postwar rediscovery of France.  The rounded blades of Provençal knives are made of high-grade, taper-rolled stainless steel from France, of the quality generally used for butcher's knives. ...

[David Mellor] was the first designer to develop the idea of combining stainless steel with high-quality molded acetal resin, in black or a variety of colors, for the handle.  This made it suitable for use in the domestic dishwashers now coming into general use."

8/10 Front Pocket Wallet
Color: Black (Front Pocket)
It's a pleasing solution for me. The slim, pocketed design fits well in my front pocket. It probably fits other pockets well too. It's not perfect. But, it's solving for an imperfect solution that Apple is takling with their phones. Tap to pay with phones and digital ID will change the market for wallets. The physical size of cards limits how readily you can access any one card. It takes a bit of extra dexterity to pinch or slide some of the cards out. Ideally you'd have 4 on the outside, with remaining cards tucked in the center pocket. I just need more than 1/4 inch of card face to slide one out readily.

Size
Color: Black (Bifold)
It’s not a thick wallet, which is what my husband likes. Makes sitting or driving for long periods with it in his back pocket better. Has everything larger wallets have. Will purchase it again.

Rugged wallet built to last (even if wallets themselves are becoming obsolete)
Color: Black (Trifold), Color: Black (Trifold)
This is a really well-made wallet. If you’re familiar with Carhartt products, the construction here is exactly what you’d expect: tough, practical, and clearly designed to take some abuse. The material is "700D nylon duck fabric", which feels thick and durable—more like a piece of work gear than a fashion accessory. In the photos you can see the tight stitching, heavy canvas-like texture, and reinforced seams, all of which suggest it should last for years. It feels like the kind of wallet that could live in a back pocket, get sat on, tossed around, and still keep going. Inside, the layout is simple and functional. The see-through mesh ID window is one of my favorite touches—it makes it easy to show an ID without removing it. The card slots are snug and the trifold layout keeps everything organized. There’s also a small zippered pocket, which you can see in the photos along the side. It’s not huge, but it can hold a few coins or maybe a couple of small keys. The wallet also includes RFID blocking, which is nice if you’re concerned about wireless card scanning. On the flip side, that also means you can’t just tap the wallet against a reader for contactless payments. You’ll need to take the card out first. Carhartt also advertises water resistance, which makes sense given the nylon construction. Realistically, most of us aren’t dunking our wallets in water, but it’s nice to know it could handle rain or the random spill (though come-on! How often does that happen with a wallet??) One interesting thing: wallets themselves are starting to feel a little outdated. I rarely carry one anymore, and most of my family uses phone wallets or digital payments. But if you’re someone who still likes having a physical wallet for cards, ID, and some cash, this is a solid one. It’s a simple, rugged, no-nonsense wallet that should last a long time - very much in line with the Carhartt reputation. If you’re still in the wallet camp, this is a dependable choice. Plus it makes a nice gift.
