I sat in a blind for a few hours observing a family of white tailed deer as they grazed through the deep snow. I especially love this portrait a calf because it captures in great detail the white tails they are so well known for while grazing in deep snow during a light snow fall. There is something very innocent and beautiful about this moment.

A unique characteristic of white tailed deer is that they tuck their young away in secluded spots and return only every 12 hours or so to nurse and check on them. People often mistakenly believe they have discovered an orphan fawn when in fact, it is not, and if left alone, its mother will return on schedule. So please if you come across one, do not disturb it or get too close.
