Circle of James Stark (1794–1859)
Pastoral Landscape with Figure by a Pond
Oil on quarter-sawn Baltic oak panel, circa 1820–1840
Overview
A finely painted early 19th-century British landscape in the tradition of the Norwich School. This atmospheric work reflects the “Picturesque” style that defined the period. The composition captures a quiet rural setting with a strong sense of depth, tonal harmony, and natural observation.
Artistic Attribution & Style
The painting centres on a wooded foreground, anchored by a mature tree grouping that recalls the characteristic structure seen in Norwich School landscapes. A gently observed pond leads the eye toward a softly lit middle distance, where a distant church spire and rolling hills emerge through warm evening light.
The artist uses aerial perspective effectively, moving from darker foreground tones into a luminous horizon. The palette combines rich greens and earth tones with golden light, echoing the influence of both Dutch landscape painting and the Italianate tradition that shaped the work of James Stark and his contemporaries.
Support & Construction
- Medium: Oil on quarter-sawn Baltic oak panel
- Panel: High-quality, stable support
- Verso: Traditionally sealed with a gesso lining to protect against movement and moisture
This type of panel construction reflects careful studio practice and adds to the painting’s appeal and durability.
Condition
The painting presents well with a stable surface. Fine, age-appropriate craquelure is visible throughout. There are minor signs of historical cleaning, but the overall appearance remains strong and balanced.
A figure by the pond appears to be a later 19th-century addition. This type of enhancement was a common practice at the time, introduced to enrich the narrative and picturesque quality of landscape paintings. The addition has aged naturally with the work and forms part of its history.
Presentation
Housed in an attractive giltwood frame with traditional beaded and moulded detailing, complementing the warmth of the composition.
