The B+B SmartWorx RS-232 Data Tap is a compact, inline monitoring accessory designed for serial engineers and IT professionals who need to observe RS-232 data without interrupting the data stream. This passive device sits in series with an RS-232 link, offering a straightforward, pin-for-pin passthrough that preserves signal integrity while enabling point-in-time data capture. Ideal for development, debugging, and fieldwork, the Data Tap lets you monitor either the Transmit Data (TXD) line or the Receive Data (RXD) line with minimal setup and zero power requirements. By using standard DB9 connectors in a simple inline configuration, it provides a reliable, low-friction path for your serial communications while giving you a window into the data flowing between devices.

  • Inline, pin-for-pin passthrough: The Data Tap connects directly in series with the RS-232 link, maintaining the original wiring and impedance. It’s designed to plug into your existing serial chain without introducing complex wiring or external power, ensuring a seamless integration into laptops, terminals, modems, or embedded systems.
  • Top-male and bottom-female DB9 connectors: The unit features a male DB9 connector on the top and a female DB9 connector on the bottom, aligned for straightforward vertical stacking or inline placement. This arrangement makes it easy to insert between two RS-232 devices without reworking cables.
  • Tap TXD or RXD data lines: Choose to monitor Transmit Data on pin 2 or Receive Data on pin 3 as data passes between devices. This capability is invaluable for debugging or logging serial traffic without altering the normal operation of the connected equipment.
  • Passive, no power required: Because it’s a passive data-tap solution, there is no power supply or battery needed. The Data Tap draws no extra current from the host devices, helping to preserve timing, voltage levels, and signal quality across the RS-232 link.
  • Broad compatibility with standard RS-232 interfaces: Built to work with typical RS-232 signaling and voltages, the Data Tap supports common baud rates and data formats, making it suitable for a wide range of serial applications—from development workstations to embedded targets.

Technical Details of B+B SmartWorx RS-232 Data Tap

  • Connectors: DB9 male (top) and DB9 female (bottom), pin-for-pin straight-through connection
  • Configuration: Inline, passive data-tap device designed to be installed in series with an RS-232 data path
  • Data monitoring: Taps either Transmit Data (TXD, typically pin 2) or Receive Data (RXD, typically pin 3) without altering the electrical path
  • Electrical characteristics: RS-232 compliant signaling; supports standard RS-232 voltage levels and signaling conventions; no external power is required
  • Signal integrity: Passive design with pin-for-pin passthrough preserves line impedance and timing, minimizing any impact on data reliability
  • Physical form factor: Small inline housing suitable for use on desks, in racks, or between serial devices; designed for easy insertion and removal without tools

How to install B+B SmartWorx RS-232 Data Tap

Installing the RS-232 Data Tap is quick and tool-free. Follow these steps to place the tap into your serial link and begin monitoring data flow:

  • Identify your monitoring target: Decide whether you want to capture Transmit Data (TXD) on pin 2 or Receive Data (RXD) on pin 3, depending on which side of the link you need to observe.
  • Power down if possible: To minimize any risk of data corruption during insertion, power down the devices if required by your workflow. The Data Tap is passive, but a safe practice is to pause activity during installation.
  • Insert inline between devices: Disconnect the RS-232 cable at the point where you want to monitor data, then insert the Data Tap so that the top male DB9 plugs into the source device and the bottom female DB9 plugs into the destination device. Ensure the gender and orientation match the existing cables for a secure connection.
  • Secure connections: Reconnect the cables firmly to the Data Tap’s connectors and verify that both ends are seated properly to avoid intermittent contact or signal loss.
  • Begin monitoring and testing: With the link re-established, use your preferred serial monitoring or logging tool to observe TXD or RXD traffic as data passes through the tap. Confirm that data integrity remains intact and that the monitoring path captures the desired traffic without interrupting the data stream.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the purpose of the B+B SmartWorx RS-232 Data Tap? It is a passive inline accessory designed to intercept and observe RS-232 data streams without altering the existing connection or requiring power. It enables developers and technicians to monitor TXD or RXD signals directly between serial devices for debugging, testing, or logging purposes.
  • Do I need any power to use it? No. The Data Tap is a passive component that does not require a external power source. It sits in series with the RS-232 link and passes signals through unchanged while allowing observation.
  • Which RS-232 lines can I monitor? You can choose to monitor Transmit Data (TXD) on pin 2 or Receive Data (RXD) on pin 3, depending on which traffic you intend to observe for your diagnostic needs.
  • Is it compatible with all RS-232 devices? The Data Tap is designed to work with standard RS-232 signaling and typical baud rates. It should be compatible with most devices that use the RS-232 interface, though extremely uncommon signaling schemes may require validation.
  • Does using the Data Tap affect data integrity? When used as intended, the Data Tap provides a pin-for-pin passthrough that preserves line impedance and voltage levels, preserving data integrity while enabling non-intrusive observation.

This is a great printer. I love it.
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
I’ve been using the Epson ET‑15000 for custom chip bags and ran into a huge issue with my original paper choice. The printer itself is great, but the Koala 30 lb glossy paper did not play well with the black ink at all. Even after letting my prints sit for a full two days, the black areas would still smear and come off on my fingers as soon as I started folding and assembling the bags. It was super frustrating and made it hard to trust my prints for orders. I decided to try Eshang high gloss paper instead, and the difference has been night and day. With the same Epson ET‑15000 and the same designs, the Eshang paper works like a charm. The black ink dries quickly, doesn’t rub off when handled, and holds up beautifully while I’m folding and sealing my chip bags. Colors look vibrant, the finish is nice and glossy, and I don’t have to worry about smudging anymore. If you’re using an Epson EcoTank like the ET‑15000 and struggling with black ink smearing on Koala glossy, I highly recommend switching to Eshang high gloss. It completely solved the problem for me and made my chip bag printing so much easier and more professional.

Need scan button to work!
Pattern Name: Printer, Style: ET-15000
Love (almost) everything about this except the scan button. The scan button on the Epson screen does not work. I called Microsoft who tried to fix it through the connection but still didn't work. Sent an e-mail to Epson and no response. Really need this scan button to work so that I can scan to desktop.
