Herkomst: Japan

Acer Palmatum wordt in Japan Yama-momiji genoemd, wat letterlijk betekent: bergesdoorn. Oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Japan en China. Er bestaan enorm veel variëteiten (cultivars) van de Japanse esdoorn. Verschillen kan je vinden in de kleur en vorm van het blad, de kleur van de stam en takken, type schors, groeiwijze. Alle soorten hebben bij mijn weten ingesneden palmachtige (vandaar de naam palmatum) bladeren. Meestal met vijf lobben of meer, en afhankelijk van de soort is het blad diep ingesneden met getande randjes.
